Honorable E. Benjamin Nelson
Honorable Ben Nelson served two terms in the U.S. Senate from 2001 to 2013 and did not seek a third term. From 2013-2016, he was CEO of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). His career in insurance began in 1965 with the Nebraska Department of Insurance, and he served as Nebraska’s Insurance Director and CEO of Central National Insurance Group. He was elected Nebraska’s Governor in 1990 and re-elected in 1994, leaving office with an 80% approval rating. In the Senate, he played a key role in state insurance issues and disaster relief. He is now Of Counsel at Lamson Dugan & Murray and CEO of a Florida-based insurance group. Nelson holds degrees from the University of Nebraska and has received several honors. He and his wife Diane have four children and five grandchildren.

In 2013, Senator Nelson was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), which is the standard-setting organization for state insurance regulators. Senator Nelson completed his relationship with the NAIC in January, 2017.
He was the Compliance Enforcement Supervisor for the Nebraska Department of Insurance from 1965-1972. Senator Nelson was appointed the Nebraska Director of Insurance by then Governor, J. James Exon. He was the Executive Vice President and then CEO of the Central National Insurance Group from 1976-1981. From 1982–1985, he was the Chief of Staff and Executive Vice President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
