Attorney Olivia McDowell, alongside teacher coach Mr. Brooks Humphreys, spent this fall coaching Mercy High School’s Varsity and Junior Varsity mock trial teams who competed in the Nebraska State Bar Foundation’s annual mock trial program. Beginning in September, the team met to learn the basics of being a trial attorney or witness and built a case theory. This year’s case was a criminal trial centered upon the dissemination of national defense information in the form of a selfie. The teams were tasked with preparing multiple witnesses, a prosecution, and a defense for the case. The teams, a combination of all four class levels, then competed in the Region 10 competition, which was comprised of fifteen teams from the Omaha area. Mercy’s Varsity team ranked third overall in the region and fought for a chance to compete at the state tournament. Congratulations to Mercy’s mock trial teams, Mr. Humphreys, and Olivia on their successes this semester! LDM was a proud supporter of their efforts this semester as great young minds in the legal profession!
