Attorney Ted T. Appel judged oral arguments conducted by first year law students of Drake Law School on September 26 and September 28, 2023 for the C. Edwin Moore Oral Advocacy Competition. These oral arguments are designed for law students in their first semester at Drake Law School to gain practical experience in the art of appellate advocacy and receive real time feedback on their advocacy from members of the legal community.
This semester’s oral argument focused on whether a conviction for willful injury causing serious injury that was based on a unanimous jury finding that the defendant had a culpable mental state to cause willful injury to a victim but not a unanimous agreement that the defendant had a culpable mental state to cause willful injury to a specific victim constituted a non-unanimous jury verdict that violated the defendant’s due process rights. LDM looks forward to continue supporting such competitions across the Midwest.
